Behind the label

Behind the name Blonde Ginand the image on the bottles

Every bottle label has a story, but ours started with a sunset and a bit of overconfidence.

While sitting on our deck at Flatpoint, South Wairarapa, my wife Nikke and I were enjoying a bottle of gin. I foolishly — or maybe bravely — boasted that I could make a gin just as good as the commercial giant we were sipping.

The challenge was on.

The name

From the day we met, my nickname for Nikke was “Blondie”. So Blonde Gin made sense as the name on the label.

The image

When it came to designing the imagery on the label, I paired an early image of Nikke with another image that stuck with me… A blonde woman in an advert, smiling with her eyes closed, utterly consumed by a moment of bliss.

I imagined her taking that first, perfect sip of gin and being overtaken by pure, unfettered joy.

The final image is a creative fusion of both. It isn’t a direct portrait, but a heartfelt homage to Nikke, a kept promise, and the feeling of pure happiness.
